Elles Besselsen

Elles Besselsen has followed an unconventional career path: after working as an archaeologist and researcher, she chose to become a lawyer. Her international academic background and strong social engagement continue to shape her legal practice today.

Since 2013, Elles has specialised exclusively in immigration and nationality law. She primarily assists private clients in matters relating to asylum law, family migration and EU residence rights (p.e. Chavez-Vilchez). She also advises on questions of multiple nationality and the acquisition, retention and loss of Dutch nationality, both in the Netherlands and in the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom. Drawing on her affinity with the cultural sector, she also represents many independent artists, musicians and dancers.

Elles is a dedicated and passionate advocate. Her interest in migration and human rights predates her legal career. Before entering the profession, she conducted research for organisations including the University of Amsterdam and Amnesty International on immigration detention, family reunification, integration, and the rights of refugees and undocumented migrants.

In addition to her legal practice, Elles regularly publishes articles and commentaries in legal journals and teaches professional courses and. She is also actively involved with Lawyers for Lawyers, contributing to efforts to protect lawyers and uphold the rule of law worldwide.

Netherlands Bar registration

Elles Besselsen has registered the following principal legal practice areas in the Netherlands Bar’s register of legal practice areas (rechtsgebiedenregister):

Based on this registration, she is required to obtain ten training credits per calendar year in each registered principal legal practice area in accordance with the standards set by the Netherlands Bar.
