Family Members of UK Border Officers Now Allowed to Work in the Netherlands

As of 15 May 2025, family members of UK border officers stationed in the Netherlands are now permitted to work freely.

Background

Since Brexit, UK nationals have not been allowed to work in the Netherlands without a valid permit. To facilitate border checks on train routes between the Netherlands and the UK, a special residence permit was introduced on 13 June 2024 for UK border officers operating on Dutch soil. While their family members were allowed to accompany them to the Netherlands, they were not granted access to the labor market.

What’s New?

To address recruitment challenges faced by the UK government, the Netherlands has now extended labour market access to the spouses and partners of these officers.

With a residence permit as spouse or partner of Dutch Border Guard they will now have free labour market access.
