Highly skilled migrants, EU Blue card holders, students and scientific researchers can take up work as an entrepreneur next to their regular job or study per 1 April, 2017. Before this date, these expats required a separate work permit if they wished to work outside the scope of their assigned labor notification.
The permit of highly skilled migrants, EU Blue card holders and students from now on states that work as an entrepreneur is permitted. Scientific researchers who have a Dutch residence permit based on Directive 2005/71 are from now on free on the labor market. They may work as an entrepreneur, or in paid employment.
Applying for a new residence permit to qualify for these new rights is not necessary; a transition arrangement has been made. The new rights apply to anybody with a valid residence permit for highly skilled migrants, EU Blue card holders, students or scientific researchers.
They should still comply with the specific conditions of their residence permit. Their main purpose of stay remains unchanged. For example, study progress should not be compensated due to entrepreneurship.
