A permit ‘orientation year for higher educated persons’ grants foreign students 1 year to look for a suitable job in the Netherlands. The policy stated that students need to apply within 3 years after their graduation.

From 1 October 2017, there are some changes in this policy.

The starting point of the 3 year term is now defined:

• For students graduated in the Netherlands, the term starts on the date they passed their last exam.

• For higher educated persons graduated abroad, the term starts on the date of the degree certificate.

Besides these clarifications, a new condition has been introduced:

• The university abroad must appear in the top 200 lists* on the graduation date
