Student internship

Are you studying law at university and would you like to gain experience of everyday practice in our firm? If so, you can apply for a student internship.

What does the internship involve?

A student internship generally lasts for two months. We offer you the opportunity to become acquainted with all aspects of our firm's daily practice so that you can get a good idea of the nature of the work involved in social and commercial immigration law.

You will work with our lawyers wherever possible by attending meetings and court hearings and assisting in the preparation of files. You will take internal courses and sit in on the recent case law reviews of the trainee lawyers. You will also be very welcome to attend the office drinks and other social activities.

Students who write an essay on a topic related to the work of our practice can do what is known as an 'essay project internship'.

Mentor

Monirah van Marissing will be your permanent mentor. However, the other lawyers for whom you work will also be glad to answer any questions you may have. You will work, in principle, for all the lawyers.

Your profile

Our firm deals only with ordinary immigration cases (i.e. not asylum cases). We would therefore expect you to be interested in this subject and to have at least taken administrative law as a subject in your degree course.

We would also expect you to display commitment and initiative. The onus will mainly be on you to approach the lawyers yourself for jobs, attendance at court hearings etc.

Uncertain developments family reunification restrictions

The collapse of the government has cast doubt on many future developments, including the proposals for restriction of family reunification, which were expected to take effect from 1 July 2012. Our firm is trying to convince Members of Parliament to postpone decisions on these proposals or even to withdraw the proposals altogether. You will be able to read about any new developments on our website.

New rules on family reunification from 1st of July

From the 1st of July 2012 new rules on the limitation of family reunification will come into force. The government is proposing the following changes:

Admission of Freelance Creatives

Point based system Since the beginning of 2008 admission of freelancers in the creative and design field has been made on the basis of a point system. A freelancer must score a minimum of 90 points in order to be allowed entry into the Netherlands. This is assessed by ‘“AgentschapNL‘ (an agency within the Ministry of Economic Affairs). Points are accumulated in the categories: ’personal experience’, ’business plan’ and ’added value for the Netherlands’. There are a possible 100 points per category and a minimum of 30 points per category is ultimately re-quired in order to gain entry.

Limiting the broad concept of ‘employment’

For years, the Foreign nationals employment Act (Wav) has enjoyed a very broad concept of ‘employment’. The Labour Inspection and the courts often refer to the legislative history in which a broad understanding of ‘employment’ was established in order to counteract sham constructions and to limit the burden of proof for enforcement. Employers, for example, who would never be regarded as an employer by labour law are regularly fined. Whether there is a contract, authority or salary is irrelevant, thus making an entire range of employers (clients, contractors and all subcontractors) subject to fines.
